Pan-HinduAuspicious Day

Pournami

Pournami is the full moon — the fifteenth day of the Shukla paksha. Each month's Pournami carries its own name and significance determined by the nakshatra in which the moon is full. The full moon is considered auspicious for celebration, community gathering, and practices oriented toward expansion and abundance.

Significance

Pournami is observed differently across traditions and regions. Satya Narayan Puja, Satyanarayana Vrata, and various goddess pujas are commonly performed on Pournami. Guru Pournima (Ashadha Pournami) is one of the most significant — honoring the lineage of teachers. Kartika Pournami marks major celebrations including the lighting of Karthigai lamps at Thiruvannamalai.
