Pilgrimage Guide
Kashi — Varanasi
Kashi is not a destination — it is an initiation. The oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, Varanasi sits on the western bank of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh. It is the city of Shiva, of liberation, of the most naked confrontation with mortality available anywhere on earth. A pilgrimage to Kashi is unlike any other — the city does not let you remain as you arrived.
Duration Options
Intensive focus on the main ghats and Kashi Vishwanath. Minimum viable pilgrimage.
Full circuit including Sankat Mochan, Durga Temple, Sarnath, Ramnagar Fort, complete ghat walk.
Deep immersion — seven ghats in seven days, morning boat rides, Ganga aarti each evening, day trip to Sarnath and Vindhyachal.
Budget Guide
Dharamshalas near the ghats, thali meals at local dhabas, shared auto-rickshaws. Basic but fully functional pilgrimage.
Mid-range guesthouses on the ghats, sit-down meals at decent restaurants, private auto for temple circuits.
Heritage hotel on the Ganges (Brijrama Palace or similar), private boat for dawn Ganges ride, private guide, VIP darshan arrangements.
Day by Day
Arrival and Ganga Darshan
Arrive, check in, walk to the Ganges. Dasaswamedh Ghat for the evening Ganga aarti at sunset. Do not miss this. Arrive 45 minutes early and find a quiet spot. Dinner near Assi Ghat.
Kashi Vishwanath and the Main Circuit
Pre-dawn boat ride on the Ganges — the most important experience in Kashi. Dasaswamedh Ghat to Manikarnika to Assi Ghat by boat at sunrise. Kashi Vishwanath darshan (queue early). Annapurna Devi temple. Afternoon rest. Evening Ganga aarti again.
Sarnath and Sankat Mochan
(4-day option) Sarnath in the morning — where the Buddha gave his first teaching. Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple at dusk. Walk the ghats at night.
Integration
(4-day option) Final morning boat ride. Sit at Manikarnika Ghat in silence. Departure.
Travel Notes
Varanasi Junction (BSB) is the main railway station. Prepaid auto/taxi stand outside. The old city ghats are accessible only on foot or by cycle rickshaw through narrow lanes. Book accommodation well in advance for peak season (October-February) and festival periods.
On accuracy: Temple timings, practical logistics, and seasonal information change. Verify all operational details directly with the temple trust or local contacts before your visit. All content on Tapovan is sourced and cited — see Sources below.
Inner Preparation
Kashi confronts you with impermanence in its most direct form. Prepare internally for this encounter. Do not go to Kashi for a pleasant religious tourism experience. Go because you are willing to see something clearly. The question to carry into Kashi: what am I holding onto that this city will ask me to release?
Personal Notes from the Curator
I have been to Kashi three times. Each time has been a different experience of the same truth. Go with as few plans as possible. Let Kashi take you where it takes you. The dawn boat ride on the Ganges is non-negotiable — it is the most extraordinary ordinary experience available anywhere. Book a simple wooden rowboat, not a motorboat. The silence broken only by oars is part of the experience.
