The Shakti Peethas

51 sacred sites

The Shakti Peethas are sacred sites where the body parts of Sati are said to have fallen after Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to end Shiva's grief. Each site is associated with a specific body part of the Devi and a specific aspect of her energy.

Significance

The Shakti Peethas form one of the most significant pilgrimage networks in the Shakta tradition — sites of concentrated divine feminine energy spanning the entire Indian subcontinent and beyond.

Origin Story

Sati, daughter of Daksha, immolated herself after her father insulted Shiva. Grief-stricken, Shiva carried her body across the universe. Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember her body so Shiva would return to himself. The 51 sites where body parts fell became the Shakti Peethas.
