Contemplative Depth

Why this location

Kedarnath sits at the source of the Mandakini river, surrounded by five peaks — Kedarnath, Kedardom, Bharatekuntha, Sumeru, and Swargaarohini. The Pandavas are said to have sought Shiva here after the Kurukshetra war to seek absolution.

Quality of consciousness

At 3,583 meters, the atmosphere itself is different. The air is thinner. The scale of the Himalayas around Kedarnath reduces everything personal to its actual size. Kedarnath does not allow the mind to maintain its usual density.

Suggested contemplative approach

The trek from Gaurikund is 16-22km depending on route. Walk slowly. The walk is part of the pilgrimage. Do not take a helicopter if you can avoid it — the approach matters.

the linga

The linga at Kedarnath is triangular and hump-shaped — said to be the hump of the divine bull (Nandi) that disappeared into the earth here. The Pandavas caught only the hump.

Personal Notes from the Curator

Kedarnath was the pilgrimage that broke me open. I went as part of Char Dham Yatra. The trek from Gaurikund — I walked slowly, resting often. The scale of the Himalayas around Kedarnath is not like anything else. The temple is small and ancient and surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on earth. The 2013 floods took everything around it — and the temple stood. I stood in front of the linga at Kedarnath and understood, in a way I had not before, what the Jyotirlinga tradition means. This is not a metaphor. Something is present here that does not require your belief to be real.
