The Twelve Jyotirlingas

12 sacred sites

The Jyotirlingas are twelve abodes of Shiva where he is said to have manifested as a column of light (jyoti) — infinite, without beginning or end. These are among the most sacred pilgrimage destinations in the Shaiva tradition.

Significance

The Jyotirlinga shrines mark sites of immense Shaiva energy across the Indian subcontinent — from Somnath in Gujarat to Kedarnath in the Himalayas to Rameshwaram in the south. Each represents a different aspect of Shiva.

Origin Story

When Brahma and Vishnu disputed who was supreme, Shiva manifested as an infinite column of light. Neither could find its beginning or end. The twelve sites where this light pierced the earth became the Jyotirlingas.
